The inaugural Downtown Sanford Criterium on April 27th went spectacularly well. The weather was beautiful, the competition fierce, and the atmosphere charming. Sanford played host to several hundred bike racers and a large number of spectators. Shopowners along the racecourse greatly enjoyed the event, as it brought them many customers on a day that would otherwise have been very quiet in the business district. The Triangle Velo Cycling Team split its squad between Charleston, SC and Winston-Salem, NC over the weekend and came away with top 10 finishes in bicycle races in both cities. These impressive performances against top professional and amateur teams from throughout the Southeast showed the newly formed Triangle Velo Cycling Team is continuing to build on its early season success in February and March and prepare for upcoming races. Each race was a criterium style bicycle race. A criterium is a mass-start event of multiple laps on a closed course less than one mile in length.
In Charleston, SC the team competed in three separate races over two days. On Saturday, the team raced twice through the streets of the popular I’On Village neighborhood. In the first race Triangle Velo’s Mitchell Luck made it into the early breakaway, but the group was eventually brought back by a fast and talent laden field of professionals. In the end the three man Triangle Velo team took two top 20 spots among the large sixty plus man field as everyone sprinted to the finish line. (continued at link below)

Triangle Velo hosted races at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC to kick off the road racing season. The newly formed team dominated the OCS races by picking up two race wins, five top-three, and 11 top-10 finishes over the two race weekends. In these criterium style bicycle races on the high banked oval speedway, events varied in length from 40 to 60 minutes. The bicycle races paralleled the excitement of stock car racing with shoulder to shoulder racing, bumping, and racers circling the track at speeds exceeding 30 mph (ok, so it's a little slower than car racing). Spectators and racers alike were entertained with photo-finish races, teamwork, and individual efforts as racers competed for over $1000 in cash and numerous prizes.
Full details of these and other early season races can be found in our press release here.
